别再心猿意马了

Do Not Let the Mind Run Wild

 


科学技术可以满足人们的物质需求,促进生活水平的提高;

Science and technology can satisfy people’s material needs and raise their standard of living.

 

佛教则给人们带来精神上的快乐,遣除内心世界的愚暗。

Buddhism, on the other hand, brings spiritual peace and happiness and dispels the darkness and delusion of the inner world.

 

如果没有佛教,只是一味地追求物质的享受,只会适得其反。

Without Buddhism, if we just blindly pursue material pleasures, we will only attain the very opposite of what we seek.


人生的所有痛苦,实际上都是从未调伏自心产生的。

Every suffering in life is in fact produced by our own untamed mind.

 

我们内心的分别念,就像只小猴子一样蹦蹦跳跳,

The discriminating thoughts within us are like a baby monkey that swings and jumps around.

 

要想抓住它,必须用一根正念的绳子,

If we wish to catch it, we must use the rope of mindfulness.

 

否则,它一刹那也不会老实安分。

Otherwise, it will not remain calm or stay still for even a moment.

 

假如不愿意对治分别念,它的力量有时候相当可怕。

If we are not willing to find an antidote for the discriminating mind, its powers can be terrifying.

 

就像家中有个性格恶劣的妻子,整天大吵大闹,家人的生活会一直陷于不安之中。

It is like living with a bad-tempered spouse who argues all the time—the family lives with constant unease.



同理,如果烦恼存在心中,我们永远也不会有安乐。

In the same way, if there are afflictions in the mind, we will never find any peace or happiness.

 

一个恶妻,不但会耗尽家财,家中男人也可能因她丧命。

Not only could a bad spouse squander all of the family’s resources, the other spouse might even lose his or her life.

 

而我们心中的烦恼若没有调伏,后果比家有恶妻更为可怕。

If our mental afflictions remain untamed, the result will be even more horrific than if we lived with a bad spouse.

 

现在许多人希望自己健康无病,永远青春年轻,其实这些意义并不大,

Many people wish to be healthy, to be free from disease, and to remain forever young, but these are not very meaningful goals.

 

若能调伏自己的心,其价值将远远超过世上的一切。

If you can tame your mind, the value of this will far surpass anything in the world.

 

华智仁波切也说:“调伏心、调伏心,用菩提心来调伏心,

Patrul Rinpoche said, “Tame the mind, tame the mind, use bodhichitta to tame the mind.

 

纵然身体和语言没行持任何善法,实际上这也对自己和众生有利。”

Even if we do not cultivate any good deeds in body and speech, taming our mind in fact benefits ourselves and all beings.”



对一个普通人而言,不愿接受痛苦、强烈地执著安乐,这种分别念一直在不断地涌现。

For an ordinary person, discriminative thoughts of not wishing to suffer and fiercely clinging to comforts and delights are continually bubbling up.

 

而我们作为修行人,应当断除这种心态,将一切苦乐转为道用。

Yet as practitioners, we should banish this mind-set and transform all suffering and happiness into the practice.

 

比如,自己正在痛苦时,最好安住于空性当中;

For instance, when we are suffering, it is best that we abide in emptiness.

 

倘若没有这种境界,那就修持自他交换的菩提心,

If we have not yet reached this state of realization, we practice the bodhichitta of exchanging self and other (tonglen),

 

观想代所有众生受苦。

in which we visualize that we are taking on the suffering of all living beings.

 

如此修一次法,就可以积累千百万劫的资粮,

To practice in this way just once can accumulate merit for tens of thousands of aeons.

 

痛苦当下会转为功德。

Suffering is transformed into merit in an instant.
