When somebody call COVID-19 a Chinese virus, a sane person would normally rather not dignify the statement with a rebuttal. But that statement came from the president of the United States. And you cannot ignore it.

But if you overcome the initial shock, you kind of get it, it is nothing more outrageous than those immigrants are rapists, foreign trade are toxic and America is raped kind of rhetoric. President Trump believes in or at least he wants the World to believe in him as an "American first, all foreign are bad" president.

But this is the last thing the world needs to fight a global pandemic. COVID-19 is spreading in America. The American president is still spreading blame. He is not only egregiously wrong but also enormously dangerous by playing the racist and xenophobic card when the entire humanity are facing a common enemy.

His diversion of American public's anxiety and fear towards a country or a region is the most self-defeating strategy a leader could possibly take.

I understand President Trump is worried about its politics. He needs the support of his political base. But don't you get it, Mr President. What you are dealing is a pandemic, a matter of life and death. If you made the wrong call, there is no politics to protect.

America is running short of testing kits, its people are not trusting their own economy and their leadership. Instead of rallying the country and seeking help from wherever possible, the American leadership is failing us by going low again.  But what worries me is that if this is a failure, it will not be one of his presidency, but a country and the world.

Current US President Donald Trump tweeted the following on Tuesday:

It soon became the top trending post in the United States… followed by "American Virus"… and a rare good news story about penguins…

Twitter users reacted immediately.

In the morning the traffic linking to Trump's tweet was so large that Twitter even identified some of the reposts as "automatic".

The tweet also incurred criticism from US politicians.

The New York City mayor retweeted and pointed out that Trump's rhetoric risked adding to the pain suffered by Asian-American communities.

In fact, before Trump gave the name to coronavirus,

..members of his administration repeatedly tried to make the American people attach a "Made in China" tag to the pandemic.

"This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a FOREIGN VIRUS in modern history,"

"I am happy to compliment the Chinese Communist Party there…but remember this is the WUHAN VIRUS that caused that"

Trump was criticized by the media for repeatedly playing down the virus,

…contradicting his own public health officials,

…and concentrating more on the economic fallout from the outbreak.

On Monday, he tweeted "God Bless the USA!" and soon after,

Financial markets went into melt down after a surprise Fed rate cut to zero failed to calm panicked investors.

China's official spokesperson also rebuked the US President for the tweet.

In February, the World Health Organization stated that, "Since the outbreak of COVID-19 we have seen instances of public stigmatization among specific populations…

…and stigma occurs when people negatively associate an infectious disease with a specific population."

Some US historians also pointed out that Trump’s latest tweet "opens up the ways of thinking about disease in dangerous ways."

Throughout history, there have been several examples of equating immigrants and specific groups of people with diseases, often followed by dire consequences.

In the 14th century, Jewish people were blamed for the outbreak of The Black Death in Europe – and then killed in great numbers.

In the 19th century, Irish Catholic immigrants were blamed for spreading cholera to the US.

In 1876, a group of Chinese people living in San Francisco became the scapegoat for a smallpox outbreak which eventually prompted the infamous The Chinese Exclusion Act.

When disease spreads, racism and xenophobia ensues.

There are many shameful lessons from history. We must do whatever we can not to live through another.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday released national guidelines at a press conference attended by over 15 people, which advised all Americans to avoid groups of more than 10 and urged older people to stay at home to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

On the lectern at the White House the next day, Trump made another remarkable assertion:

"This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic."

"It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear."

When asked by a CNBC reporter whether there were “worries about a pandemic” on January 22, Trump replied: “No, not at all. We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.”

“It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear,” Trump said on February 27 at a White House meeting.

"You can't be a politician and not shake hands."

After health authorities around the world have advised people to stop shaking hands to avoid getting infected by the coronavirus, Trump said he would stick to the old way because “you can’t be a politician and not shake hands.”

Five days later, since more than 600 cases and 26 deaths have been confirmed in the U.S., Trump finally began reminding people to be vigilant and careful.

"If you are sick or not feeling well, stay home."

Trump declared a national emergency over the COVID-19 pandemic on March 13. And in the news conference on Monday, Trump acknowledged for the first time that the U.S. economy may be heading for a recession. But still, he gave himself a perfect 10 out of 10 when asked how he would grade his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

从“最坏的情况也就是流感”到“这是一种我们以前从未见过的全球大流行病”;

从“新冠病毒更致命的说法与事实不符”到“我们正面临一种极具传染性和危险性的病毒”;

从“这是乘飞机最安全的时间段”到“我们有责任减缓病毒的传播”;

……
