Covid-19 has boosted reading, especially of the classics

首先，我们来看标题中出现的重要单词：

boost: If one thing boosts another, it causes it to increase, improve, or be more successful. 它可以翻译为“促进；增加；推动”等。在这里，boost用来表达新冠疫情期间人们对经典书籍的阅读兴趣增加了。

boost的常用搭配有很多 :

boost one’s confidence 增强信心boost economy 促进经济发展boost exports/profits增加出口；提高利润

表达类似意思（促进/推动）的单词还有promote, facilitate, advance :

Milk promotes health.

牛奶可增进健康。

Friendly contacts between different peoples facilitate the cultural and economic interchange.

各国人民的友好接触促进文化和经济交流。

A series of fortuitous circumstances advanced her career.

一系列的幸运事使她的事业一帆风顺。

A north London book club, which includes a top civil servant, a senior Bank of England official and one of the country’s best-known publishers, normally picks the latest novels to dissect. But when lockdown began in late March its six members decided to take on “Madame Bovary”, Gustave Flaubert’s masterwork about the danger of getting carried away by social and romantic ambition. The shift in the book club’s tastes was a reaction to the anxious zeitgeist, says one of its members. “We wanted a book that had stood the test of time. Something rock solid.”

<重点词汇>

1. Senior: advanced in years; older。这里senior official的意思“高级官员”，senior最常见的意思也是 “高级的，高等的”。那么和 senior相关的常用表达和搭配 还有哪些呢？

senior high school 高中

senior staff 高级职员；高级人员

senior citizen 老年人（不要再说old people啦！）

senior year 高三；大四（senior student 大四学生）

2. Dissect

① to cut up a dead person, animal or plant in order to study it; ② to study sth closely and/or discuss it in great detail

这个词的本意是“解剖”的意思，比如dissected a frog: 解剖一只青蛙。但是根据语境这里显然不是这个意思。

在这里，dissect应当理解为“仔细分析，剖析”的意思。其实仔细想想，这两个意思倒也有些相似之处（解剖-剖析）。

e.g.：

People want to dissect his work and question his motives.

人们想仔细分析他的作品，并对他的动机提出质疑。

Your assignment is to dissect the poem.

你的任务是仔细分析这首诗。

3. Lockdown

a situation in which restrictions are placed on sb's movements or actions。这是新冠疫情期间各大新闻经常出现的一个单词，指的就是各国采取的“封城”措施。

e.g.：

on lockdown （正处于）封锁

Lift the lockdown 封锁解除

Under a tight lockdown 处于严密封锁状态

1. Take on

take on 这一短语用法很多，此处仅列举一些最常用的意思：

承担，接受(尤指艰巨工作或重大责任)。

e.g.: No other organization was able or willing to take on the job... 没有任何别的组织有能力或愿意承担此项工作。

呈现，显出(新面貌或新特点)

e.g.: Take on a new look呈现新面貌; 具有新气象;

雇用;录用

e.g.: He's spoken to a publishing firm. They're going to take him on... 他和一家出版公司谈过了，他们打算雇用他。

2. Get carried away 得意忘形；失去理智；忘乎所以

e.g.：

Officials are now warning optimists not to get carried away.

当局警告乐观派不要对此过于兴奋。

And I promise I won't get too carried away.

我保证不会忘乎所以的。

3. Rock solid 坚如磐石；毫无疑问；非常可靠

e.g.：

The housing market is rock solid!

房地产市场很稳定。

And I'm absolutely convinced that it's rock solid.

我绝对相信，我觉得它毫无疑问就是了。

She has always been rock solid.

她一向很可靠。

【句子分析】

这句话中，插入语（两逗号之间的成分）是妨碍理解的部分。英语中的插入语通常是对一句话附加的说明，通常与句中其他部分没有语法上的联系，删去后句子结构依然完整。

然而，过长的插入语会打断句子的连贯性，增加理解上的困难。通常，遇到这样的情况，可以先盖掉插入语部分，找到句子主干：A north London book club normally picks the latest novels to dissect。插入语部分则是用来修饰book club的定语从句，这样就好理解了。

【知识拓展】

1. Madame Bovary & Gustave Flaubert

这里提到的《包法利夫人》（Madame Bovary）是法国作家居斯塔夫·福楼拜（Gustave Flaubert）创作的长篇小说。

该作品讲述了一个受过贵族化教育的农家女爱玛的悲剧命运。她瞧不起当乡镇医生的丈夫包法利，梦想着传奇式的爱情。可是她的两度偷情非但没有给她带来幸福，却使她自己成为高利贷者盘剥的对象。最后她积债如山，走投无路，只好服毒自尽。

2. Zeitgeist

这个奇特的拼写显然是一个外来词。

它来自德语，德语意为zeit，对应英语“tide”和“time”，译为“时间”；geist，对应英语“spirit”， “精神”。合起来，意思就是“时代精神”，指在一个国家或者一个群体内在一定的时代环境中的文化、学术、科学、精神和政治方面的总趋势以及一个时代的氛围、道德、社会环境方向以及思潮。

【参考译文】

北伦敦有一个书友会，其成员包括一名高级公务员，一名英格兰银行高级官员以及该国最著名的出版商之一。通常他们会挑选最新的小说细细品读，然而，三月下旬封城开始后，书友会的六名成员决定开始阅读《包法利夫人》（Madame Bovary）。这本书是居斯塔夫·福楼拜（Gustave Flaubert）的杰作，讲述了被社会野心和爱情追求夺去理智的危险。其中一位成员说，书友会口味转变是对焦虑的时代精神的一种反应。“ 我们想读的是一本经受住了时间考验的书，一本可靠的书。”

This book club was not alone in turning to the classics in times of crisis. The British almost doubled the time they spent reading books, from around three-and-a-half hours a week, according to Nielsen, a research firm, to six during lockdown, and with bookshops closed and publishing schedules interrupted, many people found themselves browsing their shelves and opening volumes they already owned but had never got round to reading. There was much talk of poetry, and of immersion in the Russian greats.

1. browse

先来看看它有哪些意思：

① eat lightly, try different dishes

②look around casually and randomly, without seeking anything in particular

③ feed as in a meadow or pasture

大家可能对browse through（浏览；翻阅）这一短语比较熟悉了，但是你知道browse本身作为动词的含义吗？

Cattle is browsing in the field.

是的，browse本身有“吃草”的意思！

2. volume

看看词典怎么解释：

① the amount of space that an object or a substance fills; the amount of space that a container has

② the amount of sth

③the amount of sound that is produced by a television, radio, etc.

④ a book, that is part of a series of books

这个词我们熟悉的意思是“音量”，但是在这里它指的其实是“书卷”的意思。volume还有其他的意思和用法，我们一起来学习一下吧:

“…量 ”

sales/ traffic/ trade volume 销售/交通/交易量

data volume 数据量；数据卷；资料量

“体积,容积 ”（就是数学里面的符号V）

constant volume 定容；恒定体积

unit volume 单位体积；单位容积

“册，卷，书卷 ”

companion volume 姊妹篇

Each new volume is thoroughly referenced. 每本新书都有详细的附注。

3. immersion

① the act of putting sb/sth into a liquid so that they or it are completely covered; the state of being completely covered by a liquid

② the state of being completely involved in sth

我们先来看这一名词的动词形式：

Immerse：使沉浸于；使专心于。

常用搭配：immerse oneself in；be immersed in;

e.g.: I immersed myself in my career.

我全身心投入我的事业当中。

名词形式immersion的意思是“沉浸”，通常于介词in搭配。

e.g.: People fared better when they learned by immersion, rather than simply in a classroom. 浸入式学习的效果比仅仅在教室里学习的效果更好。

补充：它的形容词形式是immersive。不知道大家有没有听说过“沉浸式VR”呢？它的英文表达就是Immersive VR。

<常用短语表达>

1. Sth. Is not alone 不只是；并非特例；无独有偶

e.g.：

Canada is not alone in withdrawing small coins.

并不只有加拿大的小硬币正在退出流通。

In early 2014 the firm claims to have been the second-biggest vendor in France. Wiko is not alone. In both rich countries and poor ones, cheaper smartphone brands are making inroads.

2014年初，该公司声称已经成为法国第二大供应商。无独有偶，便宜的智能手机品牌正同时进军富国和穷国。

2. Times of crisis 危机时期

e.g.：

It's usually in times of crisis or during an emergency, for example the coronavirus, that people run businesses with a skeleton crew.

通常是在危机或紧急情况下，例如新冠病毒期间，人们用基干队伍经营企业。

3. Get round to doing sth. 终于处理某事；顾得上做某事

必须get到的get相关短语：

get down to doing sth. 开始认真做某事get on sb.'s nerves 惹得某人心烦get above oneself 自视高傲get behind 落后；识破get out of hand 失控get in a word 插话

【句子分析】

这一长句以连词and为分界，可以分为两个句子。

第一个句子主干其实就是 “The British doubled the time”。time后面的“they spent reading books”是省略了that的定语从句，修饰time。

与前文提到过的类似，导致第一个句子理解困难的依然是插入语问题。而且这里的插入语更加复杂，涉及到插入语的嵌套问题。From…lockdown是一个大的插入语，是对第一个逗号前小句的补充，其中包含了according…firm这一个小插入语，表明数据来源。在确定句子主干时，依然可以先盖掉插入语（即前两个双斜线内的句子），避免信息混乱影响理解。

接下来第二个句子就相对好理解了，主句是“many people found themselves browsing their shelves and opening volumes”。With引导过去分词短语做伴随状语表原因，最后一个双斜线后的句子是省略了引导词that的定语从句，用来修饰volumes。

【补充】大家在理解长难句的时候，也可以遵循类似步骤：

1. 通过连词将句子划分部分；

2. 通过提取主干的方式理解大意；

3. 还原插入语、分词、从句等成分补充细节和逻辑关系。
