The Secret of Letting Go of Restlessness
Everyone has wishes and goals, but after one wish has been fulfilled, more goals follow right behind, and even greater comfort and delight are sought.
比如,我们佛学院的男众经堂维修完了,还想再修大经堂;
For instance, when the monks’ Dharma hall at our Buddhist academy has been built, we want to build a great hall next.
After the great hall is completed, we plan to rebuild the nuns’ Dharma hall, and following that we want to build the mandala of Guhyagarbha.
As long as I live, I will never be satisfied, because these structures will greatly benefit everyone’s study and practice.
The discriminating mind is just like that: after one wish has been satisfied, a new project arises.
It is like the way some people, when they have a house, wish for a courtyard; when there is a courtyard, they also need a garden.
Until attachment to the self is completely eradicated, this kind of thinking will never end.
Master Gendun Chopel said, “All living beings, even the smallest ants, are all rushing about for their own happiness and gain.”
Whether seeking to do good deeds or pursuing meaningless activities, ultimately, we should always observe the essence of the mind,
banish all discriminative thoughts of expectation and doubt, and calmly abide in the state free of clinging.
Only then will afflictions disperse.
在此过程中,最初心若无法安住,可以在自己面前放一尊释迦牟尼佛像,然后注视佛像的心间;
If initially the mind cannot rest calmly, you can place a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in front of you and focus on the Buddha’s heart center.
If mental dullness occurs after a while, you can look upward at the ushnisha on the Buddha’s head.
Visualizing and meditating like this can easily tame the restless mind, and all discriminating thoughts will disappear.
当年我在石渠求学时,有一天上师托嘎如意宝说:“如果我们没有去调伏心,心的力量会非常凶猛可畏;
When I was studying at Sershul, one day my teacher Thupga Rinpoche said, “If we do not tame the mind, the mind’s powers can be incredibly fierce and terrifying.
But if we try to tame it, we will discover that it is but a paper tiger.
Even if we only spend a mere seven days to fervently pray to our teacher and sincerely tame our mind, the state of our mind will be vastly different from before.”
I trust my teacher’s words without a shadow of a doubt.
In fact, as long as we are willing to make the effort and rely on the sublime practice instructions, taming the mind is not so difficult.
The only reason we have never been able to achieve this is that we have not applied ourselves to it.
