Do Not Let Practice Become Poison

Some people think that they are free from the eight worldly dharmas and often use this “freedom” to praise themselves and denigrate others.

But in fact, this act itself is the greatest worldly dharma.

Their fettering by the eight worldly dharmas is in no way less than anyone else’s.

For instance, on the surface they refuse offerings from others, but deep down they thirst for them.

The eight worldly dharmas are present here.

Some monastics are especially attached in a way that appears as if they do not wish for any respect.

When others set up a Dharma throne or high seat for them, they are not willing to sit on it.

Here too are the eight worldly dharmas.

In addition, when people act especially humble in front of others in order to indicate their freedom from the eight worldly dharmas,

but hoping for everyone’s praise—here again are the eight worldly dharmas.

Some practitioners believe they have deep insights and remarkable states of realization, then become contemptuous of others as a result.

This is a poison in their practice.

In contrast, there are precept-abiding practitioners who are filled with compassion when they see others break the precepts;

这是名副其实的修行人;

these are practitioners in name and in fact.

But if practitioners become proud of their observance of the precepts, praise themselves, and belittle others, always finding the flaws in someone else’s conduct,

then they are undoubtedly the true precept breakers.

There are some practitioners who appear to have renounced everything;

they are not interested in worldly activities and spend years living in isolated areas to practice asceticism.

But deep down, they always believe themselves to be above others;

as soon as they open their mouths, derision comes out.

This also is not the true mind of renunciation.

Even when you realize the true nature of mind,

there still cannot be the thought, “I am enlightened.”

You certainly should not boast about it.

When I was eighteen, I remember meeting an old man in Derge whose name was Sogyal.

He appeared just like an ordinary person, and no one knew his state of realization.

When he died, however, he actually attained the rainbow body.1

Only then did everyone realize that he was a highly accomplished master.

Thus, realizing the nature of mind does not mean it needs be readily displayed.

In reality, if you can see everything as purity and have no aversion or attachment to any phenomenon, this is the ultimate enlightenment.

As for those who believe they possess extraordinary wisdom and become conceited, arrogant, and contemptuous,

they are not even of noble character, let alone acting cultivated.

Therefore, when we are with others, we need to carefully observe whether we are afflicted by craving, anger, delusion, envy, pride, and so forth.

If we clearly see that these afflictions are deeply ingrained within us, then it means that we are not so outstanding.

It also means there is a great deal of room for improvement in our practice and we must never float on cloud nine just because of some trivial states of realization!

1. Rainbow body (Tib. ja lus): When a highly realized practitioner dies, the body may dissolve into rainbow light, leaving behind no corpse but only hair and nails.
