【200915 Forbes】the average hospital room can have dozens of connected devices—ranging from MRI machines to security cameras. That can make it a challenge for healthcare systems to monitor activity, especially since institutions tend to accrue equipment over time, meaning a state-of-the-art sensor is on the same network as a decade-old infusion pump running an ancient version of Windows. That opens up an exponential number of cybersecurity threats.
These threats aren’t hypothetical. In May, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security warned of targeted attacks on healthcare organizations by malicious actors looking to exploit the Covid-19 pandemic. That’s where Medigate comes in. The New York-based cybersecurity startup monitors medical device traffic in hospitals and identifies security vulnerabilities.
With $30 million in a Series B round announced Tuesday, Medigate is aiming to not only expand its security offering but also offer detailed analytics to help hospitals make better decisions about medical device usage to help control costs. “We really want to expand our product line and our vision to healthcare security as a whole,” says Medigate cofounder and CEO Jonathan Langer. “[With] the robustness of our data analytics platform, you can basically see anything in the hospital, so why only look at the edge of the network?”
Medigate’s technology is like a traffic control cop for hospital data. While the medical devices are often feeding information into electronic health records, Medigate’s technology does not ingest the detailed clinical information. Instead, it’s monitoring the data packets as they move across the network, checking for potential security vulnerabilities, such as a device whose operating system hasn’t been updated to the latest version. As a consequence of this, Medigate can also determine how often particular devices are used, which can help hospitals make better decisions around utilization. The $30 million round was led by Partech, along with Maor Investments and existing investors YL Ventures, U.S. Venture Partners and Blumberg Capital. Medigate has raised $50 million in funding to date.
“This is very clearly a fundamental investment in that there's a long timeframe that needs to be addressed around medical Internet of Things security,” says Jean Sini, general partner at Partech. While his firm’s investment discussion began before the worst of the pandemic, he says that Covid-19 is accelerating trends of moving remote monitoring devices into the home setting. “They're a natural extension for Medigate from the current footprint,” says Sini.
Healthcare systems around the world are under threat from both cyberattacks and the Sars-CoV-2 virus. The overwhelming clamor for and shortage of certain medical devices, such as ventilators, during the pandemic has also underscored just how important it is for hospitals to have insight into medical device usage so they can optimize resource allocation. Medigate wants to empower hospital CFOs and supply chain directors to make better procurement decisions based on data about which machines are actually being used and which ones are sitting idle. “I want [hospitals] to have a data-driven approach to cost savings around these medical devices,” says Langer.
Langer and his Medigate cofounders, Itay Kirshenbaum and Pini Pinhasov, all have extensive experience in cybersecurity from serving in the intelligence units of the Israel Defense Forces. After leaving the military, they joined together in 2017 to form the company, with Kirshenbaum taking on the role of vice president of R&D and Pinhasov as vice president of product.
The trio specifically zoned in on the healthcare sector, because it dealt with the most precious asset of all: “What's more critical than a human being?” asks Langer. It was also ripe for disruption. “This is a mess,” he remembers thinking when they started looking into hospitals. “These networks are so complex, there is no way that traditional cybersecurity products can work well in this environment.” A few months later, the worldwide ransomware attack WannaCry—which hit the United Kingdom’s National Health Service—provided the perfect sales opportunity.
While the company has so far focused primarily on the North American market, this new infusion of capital will drive international expansion into both Europe and the Asia Pacific region. Today Medigate serves more than 200 hospital clients, including Yale New Haven Health, which became a customer in 2018.
Chris Gutmann, executive director of information technology at Yale New Haven Health, says the sheer volume of connected devices is why his organization sought out Medigate’s solution. He notes that a single bed in the intensive care unit can have 20 medical devices, plus another 10 to 15 devices that control the airflow and oxygen. The health system has around 25,000 connected medical devices and the broader Internet of Things brings the total number above 100,000. “It really does become this kind of logarithmic exponential growth of devices across the different areas in healthcare,” says Gutmann.
While protecting medical devices “that would directly impact our patients” was paramount, Gutmann says, there was also the issue of broader vulnerability that factored into the decision. Looming in the background of his thinking was the massive scandal at Target a few years ago, where hackers got into the network through the HVAC system and stole the credit card information of millions of customers. “We were looking for somebody that could give us visibility knowing we're at an inflection point where we're only going to get more sensors,” adds Gutmann.
Medigate has also entered into strategic partnerships to further its offerings. In 2019, the company partnered with global healthcare information technology company Cerner Corporation, to help customers “triage and manage events in real-time,” Paul Schwartz, Cerner’s director of security solutions, wrote in an email. “While existing technologies can see and manage traditional and mobile endpoints, Medigate’s platform provides ongoing visibility of threats to medical devices and enables providers to secure those security gaps for every device in the network, regardless of type, make, model or manufacturer.”
Looking towards the future, Langer sees Medigate moving beyond acute care hospitals and into outpatient facilities, driven by the patient’s desire to be treated as close to home as possible, especially during the pandemic.
“Covid-19 is going to reshape healthcare forever,” says Langer, as digitalization and telemedicine accelerate. “Capitalizing on these new trends is something that's going to be very interesting for us to address moving forward.”
