Hello and welcome to The English We Speak. I’m Feifei.
欢迎收听今天的地道英语,我是菲菲。
And I’m Neil.
我是尼尔。
And Neil –we have a musical expression… Do you like rock music?
尼尔,今天我们要学一个有关音乐的词组,你喜欢摇滚乐吗?
Rock. Yeah I love it.
摇滚,我很喜欢。
Really?
真的?
When I was younger I was in a rock band – we had it all: long hair, loud guitars, even louder drums, leather… all that jazz!
我年轻时还在摇滚乐队待过呢。我们留长发,弹奏热闹的吉他和架子鼓,穿皮衣……诸如此类。
Jazz? Hang on, was it a jazz or a rock band?!
爵士?等等,到底是爵士乐队还是摇滚乐队?
Aha – very funny – "all that jazz" is our phrase today. And it has nothing to do with jazz.Indeed, it simply means "and so on", or "and other similar things".
哈,很有趣吧。“All that jazz”就是我们今天要学习的词组。但是跟爵士没有任何关系。是的。它的意思是“……等等”,或“以及其他类似的东西。”
You often use it after listing things. For example: I love Christmas dinner – you’ve got turkey, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, gravy, all that jazz. It’s just great.
在列举一些事物时经常能听到这个词。例如:我喜欢圣诞大餐——可以吃火鸡、球芽甘蓝、烤土豆、肉汤等等诸如此类。非常棒!
You’re not wrong. I love all that jazz too.And now you’ve made my mouth water, so let’s take a break and listen to these examples.
没错。我也喜欢那些东西。你说的我都流口水了。我们休息一下听几个例子吧。
I had a super lazy weekend. I woke up late, got some coffee, went for a walk, watched a couple of movies, all that jazz. It was great.
我度过了一个懒洋洋的周末。很晚起床,喝点咖啡,散了会儿步,看了几部电影,诸如此类。感觉非常好。
I don’t read celebrity gossip. You know: who’s going out with who, who got plastic surgery, all that jazz. I’m just not interested!
我不看明星八卦。你知道的,像谁和谁约会了,谁做了整容,等等诸如此类。我对这些不感兴趣。
It’s often used – in a list of unpleasant or boring things.
这个词组经常会被用到,在列举一些令人不愉快或者无聊的事情时。
For example: This morning I cleaned the whole house – washing, scrubbing, vacuuming, all that jazz!
例如:今天早上,我打扫了整个房子,洗衣服,擦地,吸尘,诸如此类。
Yes, by using “jazz” to describe dull things, it’s ironic and brings some humour.
是的。用jazz这个词描述一些无聊的事情,有些讽刺,给人一种幽默的感觉。
It does, Feifei. Especially when we compare it with the phrase to “jazz up”.You can "jazz up an outfit" or "jazz up a meal", for example – which means to make something more interesting and even glamorous.
是的,菲菲,尤其是将它与jazz up这个词组相比较。比如说,你可以jazz up an outfit或者jazz up a meal,意思是“使某事更有趣或刺激。”
Before we go, we should of course mention the phrase is also the name of a song from the 1975 Broadway musical, Chicago.Fancy singing it for us, Neil?
结束之前,我们还得提一句,这个词组还是1975年百老汇歌舞剧——《芝加哥》中的一首歌曲的名字。尼尔,给我们唱唱吧?
I really couldn’t. After all, I was in a rock band. Not a jazz band! What about you, Feifei?
我真的不会啊。毕竟,我曾经是摇滚乐队的,而不是爵士乐队。你会唱吗菲菲?
Maybe next time. I can’t remember the words!
下次吧,我不记得歌词了。
Excuses, excuses! Bye for now.
借口,借口!拜拜啦!
Bye.
拜。
