verse editorial: Can you tell us what a typical workday of yours looks like at NBBJ being a Design Director?
Marco: A typical workday of mine usually starts with collaborating with colleagues, both in and outside the Shanghai office. This is typically accomplished via meetings and conversations, which are meant to guide design directions for an early project or to help prepare for the next round of presentations to our clients. These discussions can help define what we should do next in the remaining day, but also help us exchange design ideas to build design culture in the studio. It is usually those team conversations that get us inspired and connected no matter where we work, whether in the office or at home.

verse editorial: As a design firm, what differentiates NBBJ from peer companies?
Marco: At NBBJ, we believe that great design helps build a better life for people and our communities. Our firm pride derives from three key pillars that are powering the future of our built environments—these include health, wellness and sustainability.
Our culture and process are unique in several ways. An important one is the ability to pull expertise across disciplines, both within and outside NBBJ. Because NBBJ designs for a diverse global portfolio, we can harness ideas across different project types. For example, an urban hospital masterplan can inform city development, while workplace strategy can shape urban infrastructure. This multidisciplinary thinking can spur creative ideas about how to promote increased innovation, wellness and connections in our buildings and built environments.
verse editorial: If you share with us NBBJ work, what are the top two projects you will choose to share. Can you tell us in detail?
Marco:NBBJ
Marco: NBBJ’s practice areas include commercial, corporate, sports, science, education, healthcare and urban developments. Throughout our diverse project types, we are grateful to partner with such forward-thinking clients, consultants and collaborators. Among our most recent award-winning projects is a headquarters that we recently completed in Hangzhou.
This is a headquarters campus for a Hangzhou-based large internet company. Our design inspiration comes from a honeycomb—one of the most scientifically efficient shapes in the natural world. The new campus is comprised of big and small hexagon-shaped cells in the planning and design to enhance connectivity. Courtyards and plaza are formed by the interlocking of cell-like buildings.

After entering the campus, employees can choose to bike or walk to their destinations. Each workstation is 60 seconds or less from outdoor green spaces which include rooftop gardens and terraces. The key goal is to create a well-connected, easily accessible, environmentally responsible next-generation campus for employees and visitors.

Another key project is the Amazon Spheres. The Spheres provide a unique workplace where both people and plants thrive. Born from Amazon's desire for a headquarters that builds an urban neighborhood while maintaining a connection to nature, the Spheres radically rethink the way an office can look, feel, smell and sound. They were conceived as an alternative workspace with no rooms or desks, an invigorating, nature-filled space housing a horticultural collection of more than 40,000 plants from 400 species.

verse editorial: In your design, how do you approach corporate headquarters in general? What are the key design considerations of yours?
Marco: When it comes to the corporate headquarters that we plan and design, the key is to understand who our client is and what they really need. Translating unique client needs into a tangible piece of architecture is always a joyful process to us as designers. A successful corporate headquarters should be designed with flexibility, connectivity, sustainability, access to daylight and nature, and a focus on people.

verse editorial: Can you share with us your design philosophy in the creation of sustainable, low-carbon architecture?
Marco: NBBJ has a long-standing commitment to create resilient, sustainable communities. Most recently, NBBJ became CarbonNeutral® certified, which is an important milestone that makes us one of the largest in the industry to achieve such certification.

In addition to this certification, NBBJ also commits to a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and to be fully net zero by 2050. Currently, we are working with Microsoft to power its future headquarters using thermal energy, an important achievement to help the company in its effort to be carbon negative by 2030. Our proposed design of Amazon’s HQ2 outside Washington, D.C., will be powered using 100% renewable energy. In China mainland, the NBBJ-designed Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital is the first of its kind that has achieved LEED Gold. Our most recent CREDAWARD Gold Winner—Nanjing Eco Hi-Tech Island, Xin Wei Yi Technology Park—is now tracking China Green 3-Star.

verse editorial: NBBJ has been named among the world’s most innovative architects by Fast Company. So can you tell us how the work process at NBBJ drives innovation?
Marco:NBBJ
Marco: The work process at NBBJ is an open, transparent one that allows everyone on the team to be heard. It is a process that drives compassion and change. Designing with empathy and compassion for our clients and end users is highly important. We believe that a designer must be keen to listen and observe. In doing so, the design solutions we provide should not only be iconic, but also meet clients’ needs in an innovative and creative way.
verse editorial: What are the biggest challenges you’ve encountered in the process of design over the years?
Marco: Each project is a new opportunity for my team and me. In fact, the challenges that we encounter on each project can be quite unique. The design process is about iterating and problem-solving by nature (sometimes the best results are the unexpected ones).
verse editorial: Over the recent two years, covid has impacted us all in every way. So what’s the impact of it upon corporate design?
Marco: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives in ways big and small. But this disruption is also a rare opportunity to reimagine how we want to work and live. Office or home, heads down or heads up, each work mode and style has a critical role to play in creating healthier, more effective work.
During a public health crisis, it’s easy to focus on physical health, but embracing a broader notion of wellness is key to helping individuals, teams, organizations, and communities. The impact of this moment will be profound, on both an organization’s culture and how that culture fits into the office. As a result, it’s an opportunity for an office to be restorative by providing a diversity of flexible, adaptable spaces.
verse editorial: What does NBBJ plan next in China?
Marco: Over the years, NBBJ has expanded globally, establishing 12 offices across the world. In China, we have two office locations—Shanghai and Hong Kong. Our practice in China is critical to our long-term global strategic development. We are now working on several key projects in Shanghai, Beijing, Wuhan, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. We’re excited to share our China design team is growing. We look forward to welcoming new colleagues and designing the next generation of spaces that enable people to collaborate, connect, heal and learn.
