Filled with scheming, murder, and betrayal, the Folk of the Air Series, which includes three novels and a novella, is definitely one of my favorite series. The main character, Jude Duarte, is ambitious, cunning, and strong, she wishes to have power and influence in the high court of Elfhame, a land of faeries. To do so, she must be stronger than her enemies, but that is no easy feat, for she is only a lowly mortal human, nothing compared to the powerful immortal faeries. The series follows her rise to power as well as her acceptance of her mortality.

The Folk of the Air Series is one of the most popular YA series and its second book (The Wicked King) and third book (The Queen of Nothing) both won the Goodreads choice award 2018 and 2019 respectively. A highly addictive and an absolute page turner, the writing of Jude’s inner emotions is some of the best I have ever read. Jude’s emotions are real, rich, and relatable without being overly “whiny”, a common problem in YA fiction. Her tenuous enemies-to-lovers relationship with “the cruel prince” had me gripping my seats in fear and anticipation.

Also featured in this series is a strong female lead that is neither masculinized nor sexualized. The relationship in this series, or in its YA slang term “ship”, shatters the status quo with reversed gender roles. Cardan, the male love interest, likes extravagant suits and wears an insane amount of eyeliner. Jude, on the other hand, is more interested in sword fighting, scheming, and poisons. However, Jude still retains her femininity by commenting lovingly on her dresses the same way she would with her swords and potions.

The immense amount of love I have for this series truly can not be expressed properly through words. All in all, The Folk of the Air Series is one of the very few books that you will cherish for a lifetime.
