The new dean and director of the UCL Institute of Education talks about his lack of a formal education as a child and the importance of learning languages.

李嵬教授

Director and Dean of the UCL Institute of Education. His work is concerned with the development and education of bilingual and multilingual children and the wellbeing of immigrant and ethnic minority families and communities. He has led numerous research projects funded by ESRC, AHRC, British Academy, Leverhulme and Nuffield, as well international funding agencies. He has published widely, and won the British Association of Applied Linguistics Book Prize twice. He was Chair of the University Council of General and Applied Linguistics (UCGAL) between 2012 and 2015 and is currently Editor of the International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism and Applied Linguistics Review.

This talk will present an alternative conceptual and analytical framework for language and cognition amongst multilingual language users, that of Translanguaging. I will trace the origin and development of the concept and discuss examples of how it is applied in analysing multilingual practices and cognitive processes. The core of the talk is focused on the theoretical and methodological implications of Translanguaging for conceptualising and researching language and cognition of multilinguals.
